Carpal tunnel syndrome

“Living with carpal tunnel syndrome can be very difficult, especially if the condition has left you unfit to work. If you believe that your condition is the result of an unsafe working environment, you may be entitled compensation.”

What is carpal tunnel syndrome?

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is caused by the compression of the median nerve and is often the result of repetitive hand or arm movements. This nerve controls the movement of our hands and the sensations we feel. Sufferers may experience the following symptoms:

  • Pain in the hand or arm
  • Tingling (pins and needles)
  • A weakness or numbness of the hand

Who are the sufferers?

CTS is a common occupational disease. People employed in certain industries are more vulnerable to the condition than others, such as:

  • Drivers
  • Engineers
  • Painters
  • Typists
  • Construction workers

Can I claim?

It is your employer’s responsibility to ensure that potential hazards are minimised in the workplace. If your employer fails to take the necessary steps to ensure that health and safety standards are upheld and your health suffers as a result, you may be able to claim. Carpal tunnel syndrome can be frustrating to live with and if you need corrective surgery or suffer financial losses as a result of the condition, the chances of your claim being successful are likely to increase.

What do I need to make a claim?

If you believe your suffering was caused by a negligent employer, it is important that you take certain steps to support your case. See your GP; they can give you the medical attention you need and explain the root cause of your condition.

It is also important that you collect any information that may be relevant to your case; make a note of any machinery you use at work and find out if any co-workers are experiencing similar symptoms.
